Places to eat – Circle, Montana

The Lunchbox — Circle, Montana

The Lunchbox, Circle, MontanaIt’s hard to miss, since it’s the only place on the main drag through town.

Hours: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. spring/summer; to 5:30 p.m. in the fall/winter

This little gem is tucked away on Montana 200. I was looking for a place to stop for my normal road breakfast after an hour or so of riding, but when I pulled in, I discovered that Billie, the owner, doesn’t have a grill. Instead, she has wraps, subs, soups, smoothies and a tanning salon.

I’m sure I’m much healthier for my effort, since I had broccoli soup and a chicken salad wrap.

Not bad for the middle of nowhere — but don’t tell Billie I wrote that.

The Burger Scoop – Ignace, Ontario
Updated here August 2009

On the north side of the highway, beside the Shell gas station. Don’t confuse it with a place farther east. You’ll be sorry if you do.

Hours: Summertime and the livin’ is easy. You figure it out.

Eat in or sit outside on the fenced-in patio, or in the front of the building. I was able to park the bike in front by the tables to keep an eye on my baggage.

This mom and pop place is pretty fine. Try the burger and shake. The burger is old-school flavor, served hot off the grill. If you’re in a hurry, don’t bother. You won’t be able to appreciate the ambiance nor the taste of good food served in a small-town setting.

Even though it’s located in the middle of nowhere, don’t miss out on making this a long-distance riding destination for satisfying eats.

There’s plenty of fuel available in town for those motorcycles with distance-challenged fuel tanks.

Update July 21, 2008 I just revisited The Burger Scoop, and let me tell you, the burger and milkshake are just as good, if not better. If you drive by this place, you’ll be sorry.

Ice cream parlors

Usually I’m making time to get to the ferry, but today I had time to kill. Thus:

Just another lake
More lake country

The pace is slower on the island:

From dawn to dusk
The swing bridge moves at its own pace from dawn to dusk

And because of that:

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream
Animal, vegetable, or mineral, nothing holds me back

Delicacies come in many flavors on the road. I try to sample what comes my way, whether it be vegetable, animal or mineral.

The ferry ride from Manitoulin Island south to Tobermory is always uneventful, except for the characters that populate the ship. Of course, those vary from crossing to crossing. This time it was someone who was solving a Rubik’s cube in 45 seconds — every time.

About an hour south of the terminal and I had forgotten how convoluted the county highway system is in western Ontario — but no worries! I have been reminded.

For approximately two hours, as I discovered roads closed and detours listed, I wandered aimlessly — which in and of itself is not unusual. However, I did have a final destination in mind. Thanks to a woman who pulled up beside me while I was perusing my map, I finally found myself prodded in the appropriate direction.

Eventually, I got to where I needed to be, but not before putting on an extra hundred miles and fumbling around with a map that was almost impossible to use on county roads. Oh well.

The Salsbury HouseAt any Salisbury House

Hours: Some are open 24 hours, others have limited hours.

You can’t go wrong with the Mr. Big Nip and Chips. Trust me on this. It’s one of the best burgers in North America. Eat at the counter or at a table.

And, for those of you who can’t exist without that staple known as Canadian bacon – whatever that is – you can have it with the breakfast special.

Update July 2010: I had the Sweet Potato Fries. They were excellent! The Mr. Big Nip was pretty good too.

Update July 2008: Since my last visit to a Salisbury House in July of 2007, I’m not certain that these places are maintaining their quality. The chef turned out a burger pattie that was pink on the inside. When I pointed it out to the waitress, she shrugged and said that there would be no charge for the burger or the drink. No offer to have a fresh pattie, nada.

What kind of a way is that to run a restaurant?

Needless to say, I rode off without waving.

Hours: Monday to Saturday 0800 – 1430, Sunday 0900 – 1400

Located in the old Woolworth’s building, it’s the lunch counter section of the former store. It’s been open for seven years. Friendly staff cooked and served me breakfast even though breakfast hours were over. I liked the atmosphere so much I bought a cap.

Eat at the counter or at a table.
