I've noticed a reduction to almost nil in the amount of spam that I receive on three of my google email accounts - although it doesn't happen overnight. It's tedious to do, but eventually effective. One thing to note: in the Preferences tab, be sure to scroll down to Spam Munging and select "Become a mole", otherwise those oh-so-clever-and-rich spammers will be able to continue with their abominations.
